(German/English) Wir trauern um David Sassoli und Clyde Bellecourt/We mourn the loss of David Sassoli and Clyde Bellecourt

Der Name von David Sassoli dürfte vielen Peltier-Unterstützer*innen weniger bekannt sein. Der italienische Politiker war langjähriger Europaabgeordneter und zuletzt Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments. Bekannt war Sassoli für sein humanitäres und politisch fortschrittliches Engagement in Flüchtlingsfragen, gegen Armut und Obdachlosigkeit, für Menschenrechte und zuletzt auch für den indigenen politischen Gefangenen Leonard Peltier. Als Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments und somit Vertreter von 28 europäischen Staaten veröffentlichte er eine Botschaft, dass er US-Präsident Joe Biden um die Begnadigung Leonard Peltiers und dessen Freiheit bitten wolle. Für Leonard Peltier und uns Unterstützer*innen ein mutmachendes Zeichen von internationaler Solidarität durch einen promineten Politiker von Weltrang. Nun ist David Sassoli am 11. Januar 2022 an den Folgen einer Immunerkrankung im Alter von 65 Jahren verstorben. Nach dem Tod von Erzbischof Tutu ist dies innerhalb weniger Tage bereits der zweite weltbekannte Fürsprecher Leonard Peltiers. Es wäre ein Zeichen des Respektes der US-Regierung dem Wunsch dieser beiden aufrechten Männer nachzukommen und Peltier in Freiheit zu entlassen. Wir verneigen uns in tiefen Respekt vor David Sassoli.

David Sassoli’s name is probably less familiar to many Peltier supporters. The Italian politician was a long-time MEP and most recently President of the European Parliament. Sassoli was known for his humanitarian and politically progressive engagement in refugee issues, against poverty and homelessness, for human rights and most recently for the indigenous political prisoner Leonard Peltier. As President of the European Parliament and thus representative of 28 European states, he published a message that he would ask US President Joe Biden to pardon Leonard Peltier and set him free. For Leonard Peltier and us supporters, this was an encouraging sign of international solidarity from a prominent world-class politician. Now David Sassoli has passed away on 11 January 2022 as a result of an immune disease at the age of 65. After the death of Archbishop Tutu, this is the second world-renowned advocate of Leonard Peltier within a few days. It would be a mark of respect by the US government to honour the wishes of these two upstanding men and release Peltier to freedom. We bow our heads in deep respect to David Sassoli.

Ebenfalls trauern wir um den American Indian Movement (AIM)-Mitgründer Clyde Bellecourt, der am gleichen Tag wie David Sassoli im Alter von 85 Jahren verstarb. Clyde (8. Mai 1936 – 11.1.2022) zählte gemeinsam mit Dennis Banks (12.4.1937 – 29.10.2017), Eddie Benton-Banai (1931 – 20.11.2020) und George Mitchell ( 14.6.1936 – 1.6.2015) zu den Mitgründern des AIM, dem sich auch Clydes Bruder Vernon Bellecourt anschloss. Wir hatten mehrfach die Gelegenheit Clyde zu treffen, so u.a. 2013 in Minneapolis/Minnesota bei der Austellung We are still here und beim International Tribunal for Leonard Peltier in Greenbay/Wisconsin ebenfalls 2013. Clyde unterstützte uns auch bei unserem Buch zu Leonard Peltier “Ein Leben für die Freiheit – Leonard Peltier und der indianische Widerstand” (Traumfänger Vlg., 2te Auflage 2017).Umgekehrt unterstützten wir auch Clydes Projekte immer mal wieder mit kleineren Spenden. Wir trauern um Clyde und verneigen uns vor seinem Lebenswerk. Have a safe journey to the spirit world.

We also mourn the passing of American Indian Movement (AIM) co-founder Clyde Bellecourt, who died on the same day as David Sassoli at the age of 85. Clyde (8. Mai 1936 – 11.1.2022) was with Dennis Banks (12.4.1937 – 29.10.2017), Eddie Benton-Banai (1931 – 20.11.2020) und George Mitchell ( 14.6.1936 – 1.6.2015) co-founder of the AIM, also followed later by his brother Vernon Bellecourt. We had the opportunity to meet Clyde several times, so in 2013 in Minneapolis/Minnesota at the exhibition We are still here and at the International Tribunal for Leonard Peltier in Greenbay/Wisconsin also in 2013. Clyde also supported us with our book on Leonard Peltier “Ein Leben für die Freiheit – Leonard Peltier und der indianische Widerstand” (Traumfänger Vlg., 2nd edition 2017). Conversely, we also supported Clyde’s projects from time to time with small donations. We mourn Clyde and bow to his life’s work.
