Am 6. Februar 1976 wurde Leonard Peltier in Hinton, Alberta, Kanada verhaftet. Am Montag, den 6. Februar, jährt sich seine Verhaftung zum 47. Mal.

Nach einem umstrittenen Prozess wurde Peltier wegen Beihilfe zum Mord an zwei FBi-Agenten verurteilt und ist seitdem inhaftiert. Viele Menschen und Menschenrechtsorganisationen, darunter Amnesty International, die Southern Christian Leadership Conference, der National Congress of American Indians, das Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Erzbischof Desmond Tutu und andere, glauben, dass Peltier ein politischer Gefangener ist, der sofort freigelassen werden sollte.

Anlässlich des Jahrestages begehen Menschen weltweit den Montag als Tag der Solidarität für Leonard Peltier, der derzeit in einem Bundesgefängnis in Coleman, Florida, inhaftiert ist.

Zu Beginn seines 48. Haftjahres werden Hunderte seiner Anhänger “Rise Up for Peltier”-Veranstaltungen in zahlreichen Städten auf der ganzen Welt veranstalten, darunter Paris, Rom, Berlin und die Schweiz.

In den Vereinigten Staaten finden die Veranstaltungen in Minneapolis, Minnesota, statt; Rapid City, South Dakota; Tampa, Florida; Santa Fe, New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tulsa, Oklahoma; San Francisco, Kalifornien; und Washington, D.C.

Peltier ist 78 Jahre alt in sich verschlechternder Gesundheit mit mehreren schweren Beschwerden. Unterstützer haben Präsident Joe Biden gebeten, Gnade zu gewähren, damit er seine letzten Jahre mit seinen Lieben und der Stammesgemeinschaft verbringen kann.

Today marks a shameful anniversary. It’s now been 47 years since our Lakota and Ojibwe relative, Leonard Peltier, was arrested after taking part in the 1975 American Indian Movement (AIM) standoff at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Wrongly convicted on false testimony for killing FBI agents, Leonard is now 78 years old and suffering with various health ailments in a federal penitentiary in Florida.

The good news is, the world has never forgotten Leonard, who during his lengthy incarceration has run for both President and Vice President of the United States. Today, “Rise Up for Peltier” events are happening in cities across the globe — including Paris, Rome, and Berlin. As part of this day of solidarity, our friends at the Red Nation Movement are also asking people to assist Leonard through their social media channels by sharing content and raising awareness.

As Carol Gokee, (former, by MK) co-director of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, wrote to you via our Lakota Law platform a year ago, the list of people who have supported clemency for Leonard is long and impressive. It includes Nobel Peace Prize winners Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, and Rigoberta Menchú; former Chief Judge of Tennessee’s U.S. District Court, Kevin Sharp; Sens. Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT); Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ); and James Reynolds, the chief prosecutor who originally put Leonard behind bars. 

As we approach the anniversary of AIM’s Wounded Knee stand later this month, we’ll have much more to share with you. Lakota Law organizers Madonna Thunder Hawk and DeCora Hawk are on the ground helping to prepare a big event, and you’ll hear more from them this week. In addition, our video team is working on setting up live video feeds and our communications staff is working on an action you’ll be able to take to demand clemency for Leonard.
